• ¿Cómo nació tu gusto por el dibujo y a qué edad comenzaste? / How did your love for drawing begins? at what age you started?

I have been drawing for my whole life, really. At school, I was the go-to girl for making posters, flyers for fêtes, etc. and I even made my own comic called “The Chatterbox” when I was 10. I never really stopped drawing, at then I ended up at art school.

He dibujado durante toda mi vida en realidad. En la escuela, yo era la chica que hacía los posters, flyers para fiestas, etc. e incluso realice mi propio comic llamado “The Chatterbox” cuando tenía 10 años. En realidad nunca he dejado de dibujar, después terminé la escuela de arte.

• Lo mejor de tu trabajo es…/ The best thing about your job is…

Amo dibujar y me pagan por algo que en verdad disfruto, lo que es genial. También puedo hacer mis propios horarios y tomar vacaciones cuando quiero (Aunque en realidad nunca tomo unas vacaciones reales, sin trabajo).

I love drawing, so I get paid for something that I enjoy, which is great. Also, I can make my own hours and take holidays when I want to (although, I never really take a real holiday, without work).

• ¿Cuál fue tu primera publicación y como te sentiste al verla? / What was your first publication and how you feel when you see it?

Tuve una playera impresa por “Threadless” mientras estuve en la Universidad. Eso fue muy emocionante, Me sorprendió mucho porque el diseño era solo un pequeño dibujo que estuve haciendo en mi libreta de bocetos. No pensé que eso sería publicado. Después de la Universidad, mi primer trabajo fue para una revista (de una empresa de telefonía celular) Estaba muy orgullosa y lo mostré a toda mi familia. Aún ahora, siempre me emociona y estoy un poco incrédula al ver mis trabajo en libros o revistas.

I had a T-shirt printed by Threadless while I was at college. That was really exciting- I was amazed, because it the design was just a little doodle that I’d drawn in my sketchbook. I didn’t think that it would be printed. After college, my first job was for a magazine (of a cellphone company). I was really proud and showed all of my family.Even now, I’m always excited and a bit disbelieving to see my work in magazines or books.

• ¿Qué te inspira? / What inspires you?

La cosas que veo y escucho. Conversaciones que se escuchan en las calles, o en el autobús, la música, películas… En realidad, cualquier cosa puede ser inspiradora- incluso las que son aburridas. De hecho tuve una idea para un dibujo cuando fui a pagar mis impuestos hace unos días..

Things I see and hear. Conversations overheard in the street, or on the bus, music, movies… Really, anything can be inspiring- even things that are boring. I even had an idea for a drawing when I went to pay my taxes a few days ago.

• ¿Porqué los perros y los gatos son tan recurrentes en tus ilustraciones? / Why pugs and cats appear so frequently in your illustrations?

Amo los Pugs (yo tengo uno, su nombre es Mr. Pickles) así que no puedo resistir dibujarlos. Creo que sus caras son hilarantes. Se ven tristes o enojados todo el tiempo. También me gusta dibujar gatos, los he dibujado por años (desde que era niña) así que tengo mucha práctica.

I love Pugs (I have one- his name is Mr Pickles) so I can’t resist drawing them. I think their faces are hilarious. They look grumpy or sad all the time. I also enjoy drawing cats, I’ve been drawing them for years (since I was a kid) so I’ve had lots of practice.

• ¿Alguien con quien quisieras colaborar ? / Someone who would you like to collaborate with and why?

Me gustaría colaborar con el director de cine Michel Gondry… o Flight de los Conchords!

I’d like to collaborate with the film maker Michel Gondry… or Flight of the Conchords!

• ¿Realizas alguna otra cosa además de la ilustración? / Did you do any other thing besides the illustration?

No tengo otro trabajo, pero a veces enseño en Universidades de arte, o en escuelas. Me gusta trabajar con niños.

I don’t have another job, but I sometimes do some teaching at art colleges, or in schools. I like working with children.

• ¿Qué se necesita para tener éxito en esta carrera? / What it takes to succeed in this career?

Hay muchas personas que quieren ser ilustradoras. El que tiene éxito es porque trabaja realmente muy muy duro y sabe como comercializar su trabajo. No es fácil al principio, pero mejora conforme van pasando los años, así que mi consejo es, no se rindan tan rápido.

There are a lot of people who want to be illustrators- The ones that succeed are those that work really, really hard and know how to market their work. It isn’t easy to begin with, but it does get better as the years go by, so my advice is- don’t give up too quickly.

• ¿Has estado alguna vez en México o te gustaría visitarlo? / Have you ever been in Mexico or would like to visit?

Nunca he estado en México pero me gustaría visitarlo por mucho tiempo… y amo la comida mexicana.

I have never been to Mexico, but I have wanted to visit for a looooooong time… and I love Mexican food.

• ¿Cuál es tu siguiente paso? / What is your next step?

Estoy trabajando en muchos nuevos proyectos, algunas colaboraciones en diseño de joyas y un fanzine. También quiero empezar a trabajar en una novela gráfica, y me encantaría escribir e ilustrar un libro para niños. Hay muchísimas cosas que quiero hacer, pero no hay tiempo suficiente.

I’m working on lots of new projects, including a book based on my “What I Wore Today” project, some jewellery design collaborations and a zine. I also want to start working on a graphic novel and I’d love to write and illustrate a children’s book. There are so many things that I want to do, but not enough time.
